On the cover: One of Edmonton’s most beloved greenspaces – William Hawrelak Park – is undergoing a massive rehabilitation project that requires it to be closed for three years. When William Hawrelak Park reopens in 2026, it will feature a new standard of accessibility and will provide Edmontonians a new experience in a familiar setting. Many of us have spent our summer on construction sites, sitting in Emergency Operations Centres for fires and heat warnings, ensuring the public has enough drinking water, and keeping our towns and communities clean and beautiful. No two days in the life of a public works employee are ever the same, yet we persevere. It is what makes us so resilient. Right now, we are busy planning our 5th Joint Annual Conference and Tradeshow with the British Columbia Municipal Safety Association (BCMSA). Delegate registration is open for the event, which is scheduled for September 26 and 27 in Penticton. Make sure you don’t miss out on this exciting event – our Early Bird Pricing is already sold out! This year, the Public Works Association of British Columbia (PWABC) has worked to deliver on a few of our strategic priorities, including delivering high-quality education opportunities to our members. Looking ahead, we have some exciting post-conference training sessions coming up, and we’re bringing back the ever-popular Winter Maintenance Operator and Supervisor programs in person. Keep an eye on our training calendar at https://pwabc.ca/ events to see what’s coming up. Another priority we are focusing on is the value we provide to our members, and our social media and marketing team has been working hard behind the scenes to create engaging and valuable content on our website and social media platforms. Be sure to follow us on Facebook and LinkedIn. It’s always exciting to receive submis- sions for our annual awards. This year’s A Message from the Public Works Association of British Columbia award winners will be honoured at a lun- cheon award ceremony at the conference in Penticton. Make sure to nominate a deserving public works employee or highlight a special project you’ve been working on. We were thrilled to have the Province of British Columbia proclaim the week of May 21-27 as Public Works Week. The theme for 2023 was ‘Connecting the World Through Public Works’ and from open houses to school events to watershed tours, there were many exciting events held across the province. We would love to share your photos and vid- eos, or even highlight some of the events you hosted in a news article. We also have an annual award for Public Works Week Celebrations, so submit a nomination for your community today. You can find more info at https://pwabc.ca/awards. I’d like to thank our board of directors for their continued support and dedication. A huge thank you goes out to Pat Miller, board member and acting Executive Director, who has been the backbone of our association over the last few years. Thank you as well to our employers who continue to support us in our passion for public works. Together we are achieving great things. As always, please don’t forget that the PWABC wants to hear from you. If you have ideas, feedback, or want to volunteer in some capacity, please do not hesitate to reach out to us at executivedirector@pwabc.ca. Looking forward to seeing you all in September in beautiful Penticton!
