I believe as we start the new year – and new decade! – every one of us is questioning what we have achieved in the past, and what we’d like to achieve in the future. Personally, some of us may be committing to eating healthier. In our relationships we may be working on seeing family and friends more. When it comes to business, perhaps there are promotions we’re seeking. These are all admirable endeavors – there is always something worthy about evaluating life and working hard to do better. I’d like to take this time to commit with those of you who are up to it, to do better for the construction industry in 2020. What do I mean by this? It’s easy to fall into the same habits, use the same tools, and work with the same people project after project. And if doing the same is getting you the results you want, great (and please share your secrets!). However, if your projects are falling short in terms of missed budgets, extended timelines, injuries, and worker fatigue and dissatisfaction, then perhaps it’s time to reevaluate. My time with CURT has provided ample opportunities to assess how projects I am involved with compare to those my peers are working on. Every meeting and conference I attend includes speakers who are doing things differently than I am. Connecting on their challenges and successes, listening to their ideas, and evaluating their suggestions with a critical but open mind has provided great benefit. Sometimes their recommendations aren’t for me and won’t work with my projects, sometimes aspects of what they’re doing fit seamlessly into what I’m doing and the benefit is tangible, and other times I am blown away with original ideas that I can see true long- term benefit from. The point is, as leaders we must always be evaluating, benchmarking, and looking for better ways to build our projects. This is the point of CURT, to provide a competitive advantage for construction users. One of the best ways we can do this is to connect our members with each other and with industry experts – at this, we are experts! I am confident that if you attend a CURT event, that you will discover something new, something that you’ll be able to implement on your projects with success. With this challenge in mind, if you’re not a member of CURT, let me first ask, “why not?” And then let me personally invite you to an event this year so you can discover why you should be part of our team. We will gather in May, August, and November, with each event targeting a different industry issue, such as safety, lean, international construction, technology, procurement, and workforce development. Come, check us out and see for yourself why the largest owner companies in the nation are part of our network. What do you hope to accomplish in 2020? How do you hope to improve your projects? Let us join you on the journey! I’m looking forward to working with all of you throughout the year. Jim Ellis President SABIC, Global Engineering Manager Engineering and Project Management What Happens When…. The point is, as leaders we must always be evaluating, benchmarking, and looking for better ways to build our projects. This is the point of CURT, to provide a competitive advantage for construction users. One of the best ways we can do this is to connect our members with each other and with industry experts – at this, we are experts! The Construction Users Roundtable 9 INDUSTR Y LEADERS Committee has been formed – team members will keep on developing it this year. The possibilities are exciting; and the possibilities are endless. If you were grocery shopping late December and happened to look at the reading options at the checkout line, you may have noticed Time magazine’s cover that featured one of the most well-recognized photos of all-time, called, “Lunch Atop a Skyscraper.” This iconic photo, taken in 1932, captures the lunch break of 11 men casually visiting 840 feet above Manhattan with nothing but a beam between them and the ground below. These construction workers were building Rockefeller Center and the photo was staged as part of a promotional campaign for the massive skyscraper. At the time, the photo symbolized bravery and ambition; now it emphasizes how far our industry has come in terms of improving company safety performance and the importance we place on ensuring every worker’s safety. Like safety, owners can drive improvement in all the areas mentioned in this message IF we focus, set a reasonable goal for meaningful change, and, most importantly, work together. I welcome the opportunity to discuss CURT’s past, present, and future with you. Our next CURT Member Meeting is May 5, in Cincinnati, Ohio. It coincides with the Safety and Lean Construction Summits. So, please join us and learn more about how you can get involved and benefit from the amazing businesses and people that comprise CURT. All the best in 2020! Greg Sizemore CURT Executive Vice President A Message from the CURT Executive Vice President As I write this message, we are quickly moving into 2020. Like many of you, I am taking stock of what CURT accomplished in the past and what we want CURT to achieve in the future. CURT was founded in 2001 from the residual of The Business Roundtable’s Construction Committee. It was founded with the goal of exchanging information, views, and practices in the EPC industry in order to better the industry and create a competitive advantage for owners. On these points, we have been successful. The men and women who represent our member companies enthusiastically share their experiences, best practices, perspectives, and resources. CURT is successful today only because our members are so remarkable and willing to make change happen. We cannot thank our CURT members enough for their passion and dedication to improving the industry. While there is much to be proud of, there is much yet to do. To achieve future success, collaboration will be the key to moving forward faster. PrairieDog Venture Partners, Operating System 2.0 (OS2), productivity improvement, emerging technologies, and young professional development are just a few of the subjects we are tackling as we move forward. Last year, we worked collaboratively with our good friends at CII, COAA, and CLMA, to launch a High-Level Productivity Calculator; we’ll continue to build on this in 2020. And, in partnership with CII, we will also continue to develop OS2 and the Safety Benchmarking Portal. Capital projects leave much to be desired in terms of how they’re currently planned and executed, so a technology component of the Productivity Looking Back, Looking Forward “Lunch Atop a Skyscraper” was featured on the cover of Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential Photographs in December 2019. © Bettman/Corbis.Next >
