To achieve this vision, CMIC brings together innovative thinking and shares the risk of innovation among its members in order to accelerate development and decrease costs in the mining cycle. This will provide not merely an incremental improvement to mining products but also a real step change that fundamentally shifts cost structures, plus environmental impacts with economic shared purpose for communities and society. Achieving zero waste mining is by no means an easy task. It requires the need for discipline and commitment in order to apply the innovative thinking and commercial applications, which drive the cost out of the equation at every phase of mining, from exploration, to development and into production, reclamation, and social development. The commitment is not only when commodity prices are down, but also consistently to generate sustainable, profitable “green growth” and economic and social prosperity. CMIC’s collaborative connectors A collaborative approach to innovative thinking, like that brought by CMIC and its members, with projects managed on the CMIC platform, can reduce the research and development risk and share the financial costs of developing technical and non-technical applications. These platform projects aim to make the products of mining (gold, copper, nickel, iron ore, rare earths, battery metals) better, faster, cheaper, and safer. These positive benefits will then translate to improvements in employee health and safety, as well as significant positive benefits for the environments and communities in which mining companies operate and live. CMIC connects and utilizes the collective innovation capabilities and expertise from a wide range of stakeholders, including mining companies, suppliers, academia, government, and research organizations, distributors and competitors, all who are involved in the delivery of a specific product or service. CMIC harnesses innovation from these groups to solve the complex cost, social, environmental, energy, and water challenges our industry faces. Other innovation platform organizations from Canada, Australia, the United States, Europe, and South Africa are involved in CMIC as affiliates to provide a cross-fertilization of ideas to help drive this industry transformation. The CMIC Innovation Pipeline A few key projects in the CMIC Innovation Pipeline that are currently in the execution phase developed and supported by our members include the following: • Underground Continuous Mining aims to replace the conventional batch drill and blast and load haul dump underground mining process with a fully continuous process. Adopting this continuous process significantly reduces energy use, GHG emissions, mining costs, and waste tailings. • Alternative Haulage Systems involves designing and testing methods to replace the use of large diesel surface haul trucks with continuous conveyance and haulage systems for surface and underground mining. • The Conjugate Anvil Hammer Mill (CAHM) replaces or retrofits the traditional high energy consumption ball and SAG mills with a low-energy, low-cost, alternative crushing design. • The CanMicro project applies microwaves to ore sorting that has demonstrated energy savings of more than 50 per cent. When applied at the mining face, underground CanMicro means less waste material is hauled to surface, reducing energy use, cost, and surface waste footprint. Why should companies join CMIC? Evolving stakeholder expectations around social, environmental, and financial performance are forcing the industry to move towards a future of zero waste mining. By joining CMIC, companies can: • Accelerate their innovation and mining technology development and adaptation; • Share the overall risk and cost of developing and / or deploying new technologies using a collaborative platform; • Regain trust as an innovative sector with all mining stakeholders; and • Help sustainably deliver its mining products on which our society depends. Becoming a member of CMIC means building relationships across the industry to address the biggest challenges Canadians and societies around the world currently face. Join us to help transform the mining industry.
