We became stronger. We expanded our team, stepped into leadership roles, developed virtual training capabilities, and instituted pandemic-specific health and safety protocols for our customers. We pulled together as one and embraced our mission to enrich the health, safety, and well-being of our employees, our customers, and our communities. We aren't the same company we were in March. Times are tough, of that there is no argument. A global pandemic, political unrest and divide, unknowns about when conditions will improve or even how to get there. But, there is hope. I dare to be hopeful of a better tomorrow and I ask that you dare to join me in action as we jump up from the sidelines and step into the game. Hope can be found in the smallest of acts; a smile to a stranger, a bag of groceries to a family you know is in need; a few kind words to a colleague who is facing challenges. You don’t need to be grandiose because hope can grow, bloom, and multiply if you just plant the seed. I believe that the Construction Users Roundtable (CURT) is an organization built on the foundation of hope. Since its creation, and through the decades, the men and women who have been a part of CURT have been hopeful about the future of construction. They believed they could create positive results, and they started by championing the idea that every worker has the right to be safe on the job site. They built on that success and created tangible results elsewhere, like building the workforce of tomorrow, envisioning and constructing projects better, and being open to new ideas and technologies that could positively impact all of these areas, and more. The business case for improving all of these areas is real, but I don’t believe that people readily donate their time and talents simply to improve business. Sure, that’s part of it – but more so, I believe that people want to be part of something good and in our case, in the case of CURT, we all want to see our industry thrive, our projects go from concept to realizing their purpose, and our sector alive and well so that boys and girls today see a pathway to their success as engineers, welders, constructors, architects, and boilermakers tomorrow. This is hope. It lives in me and when I engage with the CURT community, I know it lives in every person who joins a Committee, speaks at an event, logs on to a virtual webinar, answers the question of a colleague from another company, takes the time to mentor the next generation of workers, recognizes an employee for safe behavior on a job site, or simply says, “you can do it” when the occasion warrants. If you are hopeful for the future, please consider joining CURT, or if you’re already a member, I invite you to explore our Committees and community to find ways in which you can create hope too. This past year has challenged us all personally and professionally. While it’s great to have moved on from 2020, the year to come is going to present many of the same challenges we have been battling all along. I urge you to reach out to your CURT community if you need advice on a project, and I urge you to seek help if your mental health requires it. There is no shame in asking for help, no matter if you manage a team of 20, or if it’s your first day on the job. Most of all, I encourage you to create hope in small ways. I look forward to meeting with you in cyberspace during February’s Virtual National Conference, and I can’t wait to shake your hand some day in the near distant future when we can all meet again in person. Jim Ellis CURT President Microsoft, Corporate VP Global Construction Hope. “Few things in the world are more powerful than a positive push. A smile. A word of optimism and hope. A ‘you can do it’ when things are tough.” –Richard M. DeVos If you are hopeful for the future, please consider joining CURT, or if you’re already a member, I invite you to explore our Committees and community to find ways in which you can create hope too.NCCER provides construction curricula that leads to portable, industry-recognized credentials. The Construction Users Roundtable 9 INDUSTRY LEADERS A Message from the CURT Executive Vice President G reetings and Happy New Year to our valued members and industry partners! 2021 has arrived and we are now working diligently towards our goals for the New Year. For some, goals may include a healthier lifestyle, for others – making more time for family or a career. Whatever your aspirations, I wish you the very best. Looking back to February 2020, my team at the Construction Users Roundtable (CURT) was excitedly gearing up for our National Conference in Arizona. It was one of our best, and one of the most well-attended ever. Now it’s February 2021 and again we are looking forward to our National Conference, and again we are planning a line-up of stellar events for that conference and the remainder of the year. The difference this time is the National Conference…is virtual. While the delivery system has changed, the passion, eagerness to share, willingness to learn and grow as professionals, and the opportunity to meet new people has not diminished; nor has the value you’ll receive from CURT diminished. If anything, the importance of gathering, sharing, and learning together is more important than ever. One of CURT’s 2021 goals is to continue to connect, share ideas, address project shortcomings, and create ways to overcome our challenges. Construction is an essential service; as the likelihood of increased infrastructure spending grows, so does our industry’s need to demonstrate our determination to continuously improve. As we grow into this new and emerging space, CURT will continue to recognize and honor those who are pathfinders for the rest of us. This past November, we recognized several individuals and companies through our prestigious CURT Awards Program. Leaders in the areas of safety, project excellence, Lean implementation, and workforce development proved that excellence can be achieved together. I invite you to visit our website (www. curt.org/the-2020-curt-awards-of-excellence) to learn about their projects, their strategies, and their results. There is much to be learned from each other’s success. After all, it is at the heart of what we do. Finally, during these ever-changing times, there has never been a time of greater possibility of a major industry disrupter. That is why we, along with The Construction Industry Institute (CII), are exploring a joint venture designed to bring world-class research to market faster, with greater effectiveness, and with improved efficiency. CURT’s years of implementation experience, coupled with CII’s decades of world-class research, is a powerful match. Both organizations boast a wealth of resources that can assist your organization in creating a path to improved productivity, and simply “more construction for the money.” Much more will be forthcoming on this new approach to construction industry cost-effectiveness. Stay tuned! Stay connected! Stay informed! To learn more about our 2021 initiatives, products, experiences, perspectives, and resources, I invite you to join our National Conference in February and join both the virtual events and in-person events we have planned for 2021. I wish you nothing but the best in 2021.
