ON THE COVER Volume 4, Issue 2Canadian Fluid Power Association ❚ Fall/Winter 2022 ❚ 7 There are many headlines discussing an upcoming recession and certainly there is concern based upon the inflationary challenges. If you review the current data and strength of economy though, many indicators are pointing to a strong market at least until Q2 2023. up front Lee Jepsen Vice-President Canadian Fluid Power Association Letter from the Vice-President In this message, I would like to address one of the key questions that most companies are working diligently to understand – when a slowdown in the Canadian economy will happen. Many articles and news outlets are discussing a possible recession, but we should be listening to the math, not the headlines, and we are still in a strong market. As the inflationary pressures increase and the Bank of Canada continues to increase the lending rate (now at 3.25 per cent) the impact should be a slowdown of the economy to allow inflation to slow and ultimately reduce. The impact, and how quickly the slowdown will occur, is the million-dollar question. There has been a strong recovery in the Canadian market over the past couple years, which is outlined through our market reports; they show a 20.1 per cent increase from Q1 2020 to Q2 2022. The economy has seen solid growth in all markets, from oil and gas, mining, automotive, construction, agriculture, and food and beverage, etc. This has been a welcome sign for all areas of the fluid power industry, and if not for the global supply chain issues impacting our business and end customers, the growth rate would have been even larger. Many manufactures in Canada have been forced to reduce their production rates though 2022 due to component and labour shortages, which has increased their backlog of orders. The expectation from members of the Canadian Fluid Power Association (CFPA) is supply chain management issues will continue well into 2023, with 53 per cent of members expecting issues past Q2 2023. If this is the case, the manufactures will continue to struggle to reduce their backlog of orders well into 2023. If there is a slowdown in the economy the backlog of orders should help delay any downturn for manufacturing until mid-late 2023. There are some markets, including gold and potash, which continues to see strong growth. Expectations are that these markets will continue to be strong through 2024 due to the global demand for these products. As we survey the CFPA membership, one of the key questions asked revolves around future market conditions. • In Q1 2022 there was still a very strong outlook about the market continuing to grow in the upcoming quarters, with 73 per cent of members expecting the market to increase, and no one projecting a market decline. The Q2 survey started to show signs of concerns from our members; only 34 per cent expected increasing market conditions and 11 per cent expected some declines in the market • In the Q2 survey, 92 per cent of members have not experienced any softening in their market with another 8 per cent starting to experience some softening. • The challenge of labour continues to impact manufacturing capabilities and over 50 per cent of the member base is still projecting to increase their staffing levels. The Canadian market is impacted by the global economy and there are risks that could impact the direction of the economy. There are also many open-ended questions: How long will the war in the Ukraine last? What impact will it have on the European economy? Will there be a slowdown in China’s economy due to financial challenges? How will that impact global supply chain and logistics? How each question plays out will impact the direction of the Canadian market. There are many headlines discussing an upcoming recession and certainly there is concern based upon the inflationary challenges. If you review the current data and strength of economy though, many indicators are pointing to a strong market at least until Q2 2023. The growth rate of the market may start to slow and flatten through the end of 2022, but at this time there is no indication of a cliff event. Join CFPA at their AGM in New Brunswick in 2023! Adding devices to monitor operating conditions does little if you can’t put that feedback into context. The importance of the information gleaned from the repair and refurbishment of equipment can’t be understated. This should be a critical component of any downtime reduction strategy, as it can deliver more than just the face-value savings that result from repair vs. replace.
